Where Montana Keeps Her Promises

Preparing For Your Trip

Guns and Ammunition

Selecting the right shotgun is a highly personal choice.  So as long as your firearm offers you between-the-hand balance and the features you prefer in the field, bring it along.

12-, 16- and 20-gauge are typically preferred for Pheasant, Grouse and Partridge.  We don’t typically recommend 28-gauges, however some clients have proven to be very efficient with them.

Our experience has been that longer-range shooting can result in more wounded birds getting away.  A variety of chokes can be used and we highly recommend patterning your gun to determine the optimum choke.

The following chart is provided to assist in determining the proper shot shell.

Game Gauge Distance Choke Lead Shot
Pheasant 12, 16, 20, 28 20-30 IC/M 5, 6, 7½
Grouse 12, 16, 20, 28 30+ IC/M 5, 6, 7½
Partridge 12, 16, 20, 28 30+ IC/M 6, 7½

Clothing & Accessories

We suggest you pack for cool to colder temperatures and include in your shooting bag a variety of GORE-TEX and fleece outerwear in order to help regulate your body temperature.  While fall is typically beautiful, Montana weather can vary dramatically.

Your shooting bag should also include waterproof/lightweight hunting footwear, game vest, upland gloves, headwear, hearing protection, shooting glasses, choke tubes, oil and solvents, shell pouch and knife.

While hunter orange outerwear is not required, we do suggest that you consider wearing a blaze orange hat or vest.
